Yoga Fusion

Many forms of yoga have incorporated other traditional systems to create a very holistic and innovative system. The benefits of internal martial arts such as Taoist meditation and chi gong bring a lot to the yoga practice. In these forms we are given tools to become more present and integrated beings. We become more aware of our internal experience and develop ways to direct and work with it. One example of this is a Taoist exercise I like to use in my classes, The Microcosmic Orbit. It is tracing and building chi (prana) or life force energy from the navel into the base of the spine up to the crown of the head and then down the front body. You begin at the navel centre by building awareness of a tingling sensation and then move that awareness down into the perinuem and up the spine into the crown. You then follow the awareness from the crown, down the face, into the front body, back into the navel. This exercise is shared by Taoist master Mantak Chia.
